The Real Patrick: Guinness, Green, and God
Today, millions of people around the globe will celebrate the life of a 5th century church planter who God used to evangelize Ireland by decorating homes with shamrocks and leprechauns, drinking Guinness and pinching anyone not wearing green. An odd way to honor a man who never did any of these things.
The real Patrick is a man worth honoring. As a 16 year old boy, Patrick was captured by pirates and taken as prisoner to the pagan land of Ireland. After years of imprisonment Patrick would escape! Heartbroken for the people where he was captive, Patrick would return to Ireland to share his faith in Christ with the people of Ireland. In the face of great danger, he would pray this prayer of protection as he marched towards his death.
Christ with me,
Christ before me,
Christ behind me,
Christ in me,
Christ beneath me,
Christ above me,
Christ on my right,
Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down,
Christ when I sit down,
Christ when I arise,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.
What about you? Has God called you to do something that seems dangerous or difficult? If he did, would you be willing to serve the very people who have caused you pain? Let us honor Patrick's sacrificial love. Let us honor his commitment to Christ. Let us respond by taking time to pray the prayer Patrick prayed.
